Top, Heart, Base - What Does It All Mean?!

Top, Heart, Base - What Does It All Mean?!

Ever wonder what scent notes really mean when it comes to candles?

Top notes are the initial, fleeting scents that create a first impression when you first encounter a scent. These volatile compounds evaporate quickly, typically within the first 15 minutes. While short-lived, they play a crucial role in setting the first impression and shaping the overall scent profile.

Common top notes include citrusy, fruity, and herbaceous scents.

Heart notes are the emotional core and aromatic compounds that form the middle layer of a scent. They emerge as the initial top notes begin to fade, offering a more complex and nuanced scent profile. Due to their moderate volatility, heart notes typically last between 20 and 60 minutes.

Common heart notes include aromatic florals such as jasmine, ylang-ylang, and spicy notes like cinnamon, cardamom, and various other spices.

Base notes are the foundation of a scent, providing long lasting fragrance throw and staying power. They contain lingering notes that last up to 6 hours, the last to dissipate and the least volatile.

Common base notes include vanilla, amber, musk, and woody notes.

Together, these three notes create the complete olfactory experience and shape a scent’s unique profile
